Grinding / Transitional Cuts
To replace the asphalt,
the top layer is first removed through a grinding process. Once the top layer
is removed, crews prepare for new asphalt by chipping manholes and other
street structures to accept new pavement. Once preparation is complete a new layer of asphalt is
applied.
The picture at right is an example of what can happen when asphalt is layed on top of existing asphalt, without grinding. This picture was taken only 28 months after the new asphalt was layed. You can expect this tye of damage if you skip this step!
